Winter westerly index and central Asia precipitation time series over the last 150 ka

DOI
Key words Paleoclimate analog, transient experiments, the last 150 ka, the winter westerly index, precipitation, stalagmite
Related data Using the Community Climate System Model version 3 (CCSM3) from NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research), a long-term transient experiment were performed for the past 150 ka with orbital acceleration technique. This dataset collects annual total precipitation (CAPre-annual), winter total precipitation (CAPre-DJF),winter westly index (WWI), and December insolation at 45 degrees north of modeling output in arid central Asia (50-70°E, 35-50°N) over the past 150 ka. And the winter westerly index (WWI) is defined as the global average of the sea level pressure differences between 35°N and 55°N, according to the zonal index proposed by Rossby et al. (1939). In the following, “high index” and “low index” are used to represent the strong and weak midlatitude westerlies, respectively. The simulation results reveal that both annual precipitation and winter precipitation in central Asia exhibit cyclic patterns of 20 ka intervals similar to that of east Asia, as similar precipitation characteristics can also be observed from reconstructed oxygen isotope time series CA-D18O of the Soreq and Peqiin Caves stalagmite records in central Asia.
